What are the requirements of being a DYAO member?

Auditions are conducted in May for each new season. You must attend all dress rehearsals, concerts, retreats, and special events, and attend rehearsals regularly. No more than two excused absences (requested in advance) are permitted per concert period. You also must participate in your school music program and study regularly with a private teacher. Please see membership info for other membership requirements.

When do the orchestras rehearse?

The DYAO rehearses on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm. The Conservatory Orchestra rehearses on Tuesdays from 7 pm - 9 pm and the String Ensemble rehearses on Tuesdays from 5:30 - 7:00 pm. Each season runs from September to May. The rehearsal schedule is posted in the members section of this Web site, and passed out to members each week in the weekly bulletin. Rehearsal attendance is mandatory in accordance with the member handbook. Dress rehearsals are mandatory and there is also a mandatory weekend retreat in September for DYAO members.

When does the DYAO perform?

The DYAO traditionally performs at least four major concerts a year in Boettcher Concert Hall and Gates Hall at the Newman Center. Please click HERE for this season's calendar.

Financial assistance is available to families based on need. Please call 303-433-2420 for an application.

How are DYAO musicians seated?

There are two string seating auditions and one wind/brass seating audition per season. Wind and brass members may be rotated for each concert. All seating auditions are anonymous and judges consist of the Music Director, Colorado Symphony musicians, and other prominent local musicians.

Does the DYAO tour?

The DYAO goes on an international tour every three years. In the summer of 2007 the orchestra visited Argentina. DYAO members fundraise to pay the cost of their own tour. Financial aid to help members pay for the trip is available based on need.
